VPUU PRECINCT 3 - HARARE PARK
Community participation, the wish for skills transference and the need for safe play spaces motivated and informed the making of this urban landscape. Situated within Harare, Khayelitsha, this intervention saw the construction of a paved, well-lit pedestrian link embedded within the community—between the train station and the informal settlement—to provide a safe route for commuters and residents.
Mosaics formed a central part of the project’s community participation, with training workshops for local residents wherein they designed and made artworks under the mentorship of a Cape Town mosaic artist, Lovell Friedman. This process gave participants an opportunity to express their hopes and desires for the community through the images and story-telling depicted in the mosaics.
The project has become a well-recognised precedent in the discussion on the role of landscape architecture in the Global South and its potential to be a force for spatial transformation in developing communties.
